32 Years Since Pakistan’s Last Olympic Medal: A New Hope Rises

Arshad Nadeem

KARACHI: August 8, 2024, marks 32 years since Pakistan last won an Olympic medal. On this day in 1992, Pakistan’s national hockey team secured a bronze medal by defeating the Netherlands 4-3 at the Barcelona Olympics.

The game showcased Pakistan’s determination. The Netherlands led 2-0 initially, but Pakistan turned it around in the second half. Shahbaz Ahmed scored the first goal, followed by two from Khalid Bashir, and Qamar Ibrahim scored the winning goal, leading to a 4-3 victory. This remains Pakistan’s last Olympic medal.

Over the past 32 years, Pakistan has hoped for another Olympic medal, sending athletes to the Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London, Rio, and Tokyo Olympics, but returning empty-handed each time.

Now, Pakistan’s hopes are pinned on Arshad Nadeem, a javelin thrower. As we remember the Barcelona Olympics, the nation is optimistic that Nadeem will bring home another Olympic medal and end the 32-year drought.

Today, the entire nation sends their best wishes to Nadeem. Good luck, Nadeem!
