A lawsuit involving the origin of butter chicken has gained prominence in India.
Filed by the family behind Moti Mahal, a renowned Delhi restaurant, the case alleges that the founder, Kundan Lal Gujral, created the dish in the 1930s when the restaurant was in Peshawar before relocating to Delhi.
The lawsuit targets rival chain Daryaganj, accusing it of falsely claiming to have invented butter chicken and dal makhani, seeking $240,000 in damages.
Daryaganj asserts that its late family member partnered with Gujral to open the Delhi restaurant in 1947, giving it a legitimate claim. The dispute has garnered widespread attention in India, with debates on social media and national TV segments exploring the dish’s history.
