Iraq criticizes the ‘reckless’ airstrikes by the United States on Iran-supported factions.

Iraq strongly condemns the US airstrikes on Iran-backed groups, considering them a blatant violation of its sovereignty.

The US claims the attacks were proportionate and targeted Iran-affiliated groups. The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), dominated by Iran-backed militias, criticizes the “treacherous” US action, stating that one fighter was killed and others injured. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin justifies the strikes as a response to escalatory attacks against US and international forces. Iraq’s Prime Minister’s spokesperson calls the US action a reckless escalation undermining years of cooperation.

The Iraqi government views these operations as acts of aggression against its people and urges the international community to help restore peace. National security adviser Qassem al-Aaraji believes the US should focus on halting the Israeli offensive in Gaza rather than targeting Iraqi bases.

The US emphasizes its readiness to take further measures to protect its personnel and facilities, urging the Iran-backed groups to cease their attacks. Last week, four US military personnel were injured in a missile attack on Iraq’s Al Asad air base, with the US blaming an Iran-backed militia.

The US has designated Kataib Hezbollah, a powerful Iraqi Shia militia receiving support from Iran, as a terrorist organization since 2009. The recent attack on Al Asad follows a US drone strike in Baghdad that killed a high-ranking PMF commander, contributing to heightened tensions in the region.
