A special gold Lego piece discovered at Goodwill was sold for $18,000.

A special gold piece from Lego’s Bionicle series, made of 14-karat gold, was found at a Goodwill store in central Pennsylvania. It was auctioned for over $18,000, as reported by USA Today.

The golden Kanohi Hau mask was discovered in a jewelry bag sent to the Du Bois Goodwill Store. Goodwill spokesperson Jessica Illuzzi mentioned that the staff didn’t realize how valuable it was until they posted it on their online platform, and people started making private offers.

Upon researching, they found out that it was one of the 30 golden masks released by Lego in 2001, with 25 given to Lego employees and the remaining five distributed in a contest.

The mask, weighing around 9 ounces and standing about 1 inch tall, was described as a “truly unique, rare, collectible piece” in the Goodwill auction. The item received 48 bids and was sold for $18,101 to an anonymous buyer.

Vice President Chad Smith, with almost 25 years at the company, mentioned that this was the highest-priced piece he has ever sold. Both Smith and Illuzzi stated that the proceeds from the auction will support Goodwill’s mission of assisting those facing obstacles and providing training opportunities.
