Members of Parliament from both the ruling party and the opposition seemed to agree on the issue of the shocking letter written by judges from the Islamabad High Court.
The letter accused Pakistan’s intelligence agencies of meddling in court cases. Both sides praised the Supreme Court for taking notice of these serious allegations on its own accord (suo motu).
The letter, written by six judges, urged the head of the judiciary to address the problem of intelligence agencies influencing court decisions. The letter caused a major crisis, and many people called on the Supreme Court to investigate these claims under a specific article of the Pakistani constitution.
The Supreme Court did take notice, even though the government had already set up a one-person investigation. A large panel of seven judges, led by the Chief Justice, will begin hearing the case on Wednesday.
Politicians from various parties expressed their views on the situation. The Defense Minister supported the Supreme Court’s decision, hoping for a positive outcome during Ramadan, a holy month for Muslims. The opposition party leader requested that more judges be included on the panel, arguing that such serious matters usually involve a larger group. Other politicians also praised the Supreme Court’s action and called for reforms or a thorough investigation.
Overall, there seems to be hope that the Supreme Court’s involvement will bring an end to the controversy and reveal the truth to the public.
