The IHC has prevented PEMRA from punishing TV channels.

The Islamabad High Court has responded to a petition challenging PEMRA’s ban on reporting court proceedings by sending notices to PEMRA and the information secretary.

They have halted PEMRA from penalizing TV channels based on this ban. Additionally, they have also issued a notice regarding another petition seeking to entirely suspend the PEMRA notification. This indicates an ongoing legal dispute over how media should report court events while maintaining both media freedom and judicial integrity.

The Lahore High Court has issued a notice to PEMRA over a similar petition opposing the ban on reporting court proceedings. In a hearing led by Justice Abid Aziz Shaikh, local lawyers Samra and Zain presented their arguments.

They emphasized that there haven’t been any formal complaints justifying the ban and that existing rules and regulations can address any issues with reporting court proceedings. PEMRA’s legal representative argued the notification was lawful and should be handled by their Islamabad office. Consequently, the court postponed the hearing.
