Karachi has experienced its hottest weather since the 2015 heatwave.

Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz said that Karachi is experiencing its hottest weather since the 2015 heatwave when temperatures hit 44.8°C.

This year, the highest recorded temperature was 42°C. He explained that heatwaves in 2015 and 2024 were caused by low atmospheric pressure and high humidity, making the heat feel even worse.

In June, the average temperature was around 29-30°C. The highest-ever June temperature in Karachi was 47°C in 1979, and the highest May temperature was 47°C in 1938. Dr. Sarfaraz mentioned that climate change is causing more frequent and severe weather events, linking this to studies on global warming.

Dr. Aamir Alamgir from Karachi University noted that Karachi’s average yearly temperature has increased by 2.25°C over 59 years, which is much higher than the global average. During the 2015 heatwave, the heat index reached 66°C, causing significant hardship, especially for those with limited resources. Unfortunately, this year’s heatwave has also resulted in several deaths.

On Sunday, three people died from heatstroke in Karachi. The heat index reached 55°C as temperatures rose to 39.2°C with 54% humidity. Dr. Sarfaraz said the low-pressure area causing the heatwave is weakening and conditions should improve by tomorrow.
