Saudi Arabia Cracks Down on Residency and Labor Law Violations: Over 20,000 Arrested

In a sweeping operation aimed at enforcing residency, work, and border security laws, Saudi Arabia has conducted a massive crackdown resulting in the arrest of 20,093 individuals across the kingdom from July 4th to July 10th.

According to reports from the Saudi Press Agency, the crackdown targeted various regions, leading to the apprehension of individuals for different violations:

  • 12,460 individuals were found violating residency regulations.
  • 5,400 breached border security protocols.
  • 2,233 were in contravention of labor laws.

Nationalities and Legal Procedures

Among those arrested, 1,737 individuals attempted illegal entry into Saudi Arabia, predominantly comprising 42% Yemenis, 57% Ethiopians, and 1% from other nationalities. Additionally:

  • 49 individuals were caught attempting to leave the kingdom unlawfully.
  • 16 were apprehended for aiding violators by transporting, sheltering, or employing them.

Currently, 19,841 expatriates (18,209 men and 1,632 women) are undergoing legal procedures. Of these, 9,438 have been advised to contact their embassies or consulates for proper travel documentation. Moreover:

  • 3,833 individuals are arranging departure bookings.
  • 11,655 have already been repatriated.

Legal Consequences and Penalties

The Ministry of Interior has emphasized severe penalties for those involved in facilitating illegal entries or aiding violators. Penalties include imprisonment for up to 15 years, fines reaching SAR 1 million, and confiscation of vehicles and properties used for transport or shelter.

Citizen and Resident Responsibilities

Highlighting the seriousness of these offenses, Saudi authorities have urged citizens and residents to report violations through designated emergency hotlines across the kingdom.

Special Advisory During Hajj Season

In light of the upcoming Hajj season, authorities have reiterated the necessity of obtaining proper permits for performing the religious pilgrimage. This advisory follows incidents where some pilgrims lacked the required permits, leading to complications during the spiritual journey.
