Punjab to Use AI for Issuing Traffic Violation Fines

The Punjab government is set to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) to issue traffic violation fines, aiming to reduce smog and enforce regulations more effectively.

This new system will use advanced cameras to monitor and fine vehicles that emit excessive smoke. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed transport authorities to focus on vehicles with high emissions, utilizing Punjab Safe City Cameras in Lahore for this purpose.

The AI technology will assess smoke levels from cars, motorcycles, and auto-rickshaws. Lahore Traffic Police have already started issuing fines for high smoke levels from various vehicles, including trucks, buses, and motorcycles.

Authorities are capturing images and videos of offending vehicles, which will be included in electronic tickets. Senior Minister Punjab Maryam Aurangzeb stated that this technology aims to protect the environment and enforce traffic laws.

Smog has been a persistent issue in Punjab, particularly in Lahore, driven by agricultural burning, older vehicles, and industrial emissions.
