Afghanistan Cricket Board Bans Ihsanullah Janat for Corruption

KABUL: Afghanistan’s cricket board has banned former international batter Ihsanullah Janat for five years after he admitted to corruption in a domestic league. Three other players are also being investigated for match-fixing.

Janat, 26, known for his talent with three Tests, 16 ODIs, and one T20 international, is the younger brother of former Afghan skipper Nawroz Mangal. The ban follows breaches of anti-corruption codes during the 2024 Kabul Premier League, where Janat played for Shamshad Eagles, scoring 72 runs in four innings.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) stated that Janat confessed to his involvement in corrupt activities, and the ban takes effect immediately. This comes after former national player Shafiqullah Shafaq was banned for six years in 2020 for similar reasons.

Afghanistan’s cricket team has made significant progress internationally, notably beating England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup after defeating Australia and New Zealand.
