US Denies Any Role in Sheikh Hasina’s Ouster

Sheikh Hasina

The United States has firmly denied any involvement in the recent resignation and departure of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina stepped down and fled the country following violent protests. However, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed allegations of US interference, calling such claims “simply false.”

In a recent report by Economic Times, it was suggested that Hasina had accused the US of playing a part in her ousting, allegedly due to American interests in controlling Saint Martin Island in the Bay of Bengal. However, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that his mother never made such a statement.

Jean-Pierre emphasized that the future of Bangladesh should be decided by its people, reaffirming the US position on the matter.

After Hasina’s resignation, an interim government led by Nobel Peace laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus was formed to oversee the next elections. Bangladesh has been in turmoil since student protests escalated into a broader movement demanding Hasina’s removal. Hasina had secured a fourth consecutive term in January, in an election criticized as neither free nor fair by the US State Department.

Following her resignation, Hasina left for New Delhi, ending her 15-year-long rule.
