ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), along with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and several other leaders, has been charged in connection with the death of an Islamabad policeman during a recent protest.
The charges include attempted murder, arson, and violence against police officers. Other PTI members named in the case include Azam Swati, Omar Ayub, and Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, along with 500 unidentified individuals.
The case was filed at Noon Police Station after the death of Constable Abdul Hameed, who was allegedly attacked during the PTI protest at D Chowk on October 4. Reports suggest that he was kidnapped by protesters and later died from his injuries.
The First Information Report (FIR) states that police were attacked with sticks, stones, and iron rods, and their uniforms were torn. It also claims that protesters fired at the police, used tear gas, and set government and public property on fire. The protesters reportedly shouted slogans against the government and the state.
This incident has led to five cases being registered against Imran Khan and other party leaders related to the protest. Additionally, 105 others are named in a separate case filed on October 6.
The situation in Islamabad remains tense as PTI continues its protests for judicial independence and the release of its founder, who has been in jail for over a year. Clashes have occurred between law enforcement and PTI workers, with both sides accusing each other of initiating violence.
Several PTI leaders, including Imran Khan’s sisters, Aleema and Uzma Khan, were detained during the October 4 protests and are currently in police custody. Charges against them include serious allegations under anti-terrorism laws.
