Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa retires today (Friday) after more than a year of service. Tomorrow, Justice Yahya Afridi will take his place as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan, with President Asif Ali Zardari administering the oath.
A farewell dinner was held last night by the Supreme Court Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council in honor of Justice Isa. The event was attended by Justice Afridi, Supreme Court judges, and high court Chief Justices.
Justice Afridi’s appointment follows a historic shift introduced by the 26th Constitutional Amendment, where a new Special Parliamentary Committee nominates the Chief Justice from the three most senior Supreme Court judges. The committee’s recommendation of Justice Afridi was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and later by the President.
