Many Palestinians came together on Wednesday in front of the Nelson Mandela statue in the West Bank to express their gratitude to South Africa. They thanked South Africa for taking a “genocide” case against Israel concerning the bombing of Gaza.
The people in the gathering waved Palestinian flags, listened to speeches, and held signs with messages like “Stop the genocide” and “Thank you South Africa.” The United Nations’ top court will start hearings on Thursday, and South Africa hopes the judges will make Israel stop the bombing.
After speaking to the crowd, Ramallah mayor Issa Kassis said it’s crucial to show appreciation to those who understand their pain. He mentioned feeling that South Africa listens to their hearts.
The African National Congress in South Africa has supported the Palestinian cause for a long time, often connecting it to their own fight against apartheid. The apartheid government in South Africa had friendly ties with Israel. Nelson Mandela, a prominent leader in South Africa, once said that their freedom wouldn’t be complete without the freedom of the Palestinians.
Mvuyo Mhangwane, South Africa’s representative to the Palestinians, emphasized that his country remembers Mandela’s words. He conveyed a message of lasting friendship, stating that South Africa is a friend of Palestine in good times and bad. He reassured the Palestinians that they are not alone.
