ChatGPT for macOS is now free to use.

The ChatGPT desktop app for macOS is now available to everyone, as long as you have an Apple Silicon Mac (sorry, Intel Mac users) running macOS Sonoma or later.

OpenAI initially released the app to Plus subscribers last month and has now made it accessible to all users.

Interestingly, ChatGPT has an official macOS app before it has one for Windows. This is notable because Microsoft is a key partner of OpenAI. However, Windows 11 includes the OpenAI-powered Microsoft CoPilot, which is likely why a separate ChatGPT app for Windows hasn’t been prioritized. OpenAI is also collaborating with Apple on a project called Apple Intelligence, set to launch later this year, except in Europe.

The Mac app includes a handy keyboard shortcut (option-space by default, but you can change it) for quickly typing chatbot queries from anywhere on your Mac. The app looks and works just like the ChatGPT website, including features like custom GPTs, but it’s a native app. You can also upload files, photos, and screenshots directly within the app.

This new availability means that Mac users can now enjoy the convenience of a dedicated ChatGPT app, enhancing their workflow with easy access to AI-powered assistance.
