On Thursday, a district and sessions court reserved its decision on appeals by former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the Iddat case, with the verdict expected on May 29.
The lead counsel for the complainant was absent, so after the defense and prosecutor finished their arguments, the court decided to reserve its ruling.
Religious and political leaders allied with Imran Khan’s party, PTI, called the case fabricated and politically motivated. They argued that, according to Islamic teachings, the woman’s testimony in Iddat matters should be sufficient and credible. They urged the government and judiciary to stop actions that they believe harm family and marital life and called for religious scholars to oppose what they see as conspiracies.
In another case, Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s appeals regarding their conviction in the cipher case were postponed because the prosecutor needed more time for his arguments. The hearing at the Islamabad High Court was adjourned to May 28, with the defense requesting additional time to respond to the prosecution’s claims.
