Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in a stable but serious condition after being shot multiple times on Wednesday, according to doctors.
He underwent a five-hour surgery and is currently in intensive care at a hospital in Banska Bystrica.
The shooting occurred in the town of Handlova while Mr Fico was meeting with supporters outside a cultural center. The gunman, who fired at close range, was apprehended at the scene. Mr Fico was hit in the stomach and arm and was quickly transported to the hospital by air ambulance.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estoka described the incident as a politically motivated assassination attempt. Mr Fico is a controversial figure known for his views on military aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.
The shooting has sparked condemnation from various quarters and is seen as an attack on democracy. Police have not yet identified the alleged suspect, but unconfirmed reports suggest he was a 71-year-old writer and political activist critical of the government’s policies.
In response to the attack, Slovakia’s state security council will meet, and the government will convene on Thursday morning. The incident has raised concerns about the rise of hateful rhetoric in society and its potential consequences.
