We hear a lot about antioxidants in beauty products and food, but what exactly are they and why are they good for us?
Antioxidants are like tiny warriors in your body that fight off free radicals, which can damage your cells. Think of free radicals as troublemakers and antioxidants as the body’s bodyguards.
As we age, our bodies need more antioxidants to stay healthy. They can help us keep our muscles strong, and our minds sharp, and even reduce our risk of some diseases.
How to get more antioxidants:
Eat a rainbow! Fruits and vegetables in all colors are packed with antioxidants. The brighter the color, the more antioxidants it usually has. Try a smoothie for breakfast or roasted veggies for dinner.
Snack smart: Nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate are delicious sources of antioxidants. Enjoy a handful of nuts or a couple of dark chocolate squares for a healthy pick-me-up.
Brazil nuts: These are a great source of selenium, an important antioxidant. Just one Brazil nut a day is all you need!
This is just a starting point. There are many other antioxidant-rich foods out there. Experiment and find what you enjoy most!
