Egypt has decided to join South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
This decision is due to Israel’s increasing attacks on civilians in Gaza. The lawsuit accuses Israel of not following the Genocide Convention rules in its actions towards Gaza. Egypt’s decision comes when there is growing global concern about Israeli violence against Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
South Africa started the case, accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The death toll from Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has exceeded 35,000. The ICJ gave a temporary ruling acknowledging the possible risk of genocide in Gaza and instructed Israel to prevent genocidal acts. However, the court rejected South Africa’s application for emergency measures. Egypt’s decision aligns it with Turkey and Colombia, who have also expressed their intent to join the case.
In response, Israel maintains that its actions in Gaza are in line with international law and criticizes the genocide case as baseless. The addition of Egypt to the legal challenge is seen as a diplomatic loss for Israel. The ongoing legal developments coincide with renewed clashes between Israel and Hamas in northern Gaza and the displacement of civilians from Rafah.
