Ex-ISI Chief Faiz Hamid Arrested by Military, Faces Court Martial

RAWALPINDI: Former ISI Chief, Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hamid, has been arrested by the Pakistan Army over allegations of land grabbing and theft, according to a statement from the military’s media wing, ISPR.

The ISPR revealed that a detailed inquiry was conducted by the Pakistan Army following orders from the Supreme Court. The inquiry was initiated to investigate complaints against Lt Gen (retd) Hamid in the Top City Case.

Based on the findings, the military has started the process of a Field General Court Martial against the former spymaster under the Pakistan Army Act. The inquiry also uncovered multiple violations of the Pakistan Army Act after his retirement.

The arrest follows a petition filed last year by the CEO of a housing society, accusing the former ISI director general of land grabbing and stealing valuables during a raid. The petition was heard by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

In November 2023, the court directed the petitioner to approach the relevant forum for further action against the retired general. The court’s written order noted that the allegations, if proven true, would severely damage the reputation of the Federal Government, the Armed Forces, ISI, and Pakistan Rangers.

Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid had sought early retirement in November 2022, which was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in December. Before his retirement, he served as the corps commander of Peshawar and Bahawalpur.
