Heavy Rainfall Causes Power Outages and Flooding in Sindh

HYDERABAD: A 90-minute heavy monsoon rain hit Hyderabad on Saturday night, flooding main roads. Civic agencies worked to remove water from low-lying areas.

The Met Office recorded 29.2mm of rain from 9:30 pm Saturday to 8:00 am Sunday. Heavy rainfall also hit Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Sanghar, and other districts, causing widespread power outages.

HESCO shut down 48 feeders in Hyderabad for safety reasons, with power gradually restored by midnight. Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro and Aftab Khanzada visited the Hyderabad Water & Sewerage Corporation’s pumping station.

Two people, Pervez Masih and Naseem Maih, were injured when a rooftop collapsed near Christian Colony in Latifabad. Areas like Liaquat Colony, Cloth Market, Citizens Colony, Gulistan-i-Sajjad, Makrani Para, Sehrish Nagar, Sheedi Goth, Nusrat Colony, and parts of Latifabad were flooded.

According to a HESCO spokesperson, 214 feeders were affected by heavy rain in Jamshoro, Sehwan, Manjhand, Sann, Thatta, Badin, Tando Mohammad Khan, Matiari, Hala, Sanghar, and Nawabshah. Out of 624 11kv feeders, 149 tripped due to the rain.

A breach in the dyke of the Rohri Canal led to flooding in Tando Adam and nearby villages on Sunday. The breach, at RD-287, was 50ft wide according to Sukkur Barrage Chief Engineer Mansoor Memon, who hoped it would be mostly repaired by Monday morning.

In Dadu district, over 200 villages in the Kachho belt were cut off from Johi and other towns due to rainwater from the Khirthar mountains. Villagers and their animals struggled to move to safer areas. Superintendent Engineer Iqbal Palijo said canals, rivers, and drains were overflowing, with water moving towards Manchhar Lake.
