Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has firmly declared that his party will not join the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) proposed grand alliance. He cited past experiences where opposition parties have used such platforms for their own benefit.
Clear Stance on Alliances
During an appearance on Geo News’ “Capital Talk” on Thursday, Hafiz Naeem explained his position. “We will align with the opposition parties on some issues and hold meetings with them, but we will not become part of any alliance,” he stated.
This comes after PTI senior leader Asad Qaiser revealed that the party’s founder, Imran Khan, had endorsed the formation of a “grand opposition alliance” to lead a strong anti-government movement. Qaiser also mentioned that PTI supports JI’s ongoing sit-in against the steep increase in electricity bills.
Protests Against High Electricity Bills
The JI is actively protesting against inflated electricity bills and high taxes. Their demonstrations have gained traction, with sit-ins in various locations, including a significant one in Rawalpindi. Despite government attempts to negotiate, JI remains firm in its demands.
Concerns Over Government’s Negotiation Efforts
In his conversation with “Capital Talk” host Hamid Mir, Hafiz Naeem expressed frustration over the government’s lack of seriousness in negotiations. “The government officials requested us to end the sit-in, but we asked them to show us the IPPs’ (Independent Power Producers) contracts,” he said, implying there might be hidden issues within these contracts.
Naeem also emphasized that his party is committed to staying until their demands are met. “The government thinks we came here for a day or two, but let me tell them: we will not leave until our demands are met,” he asserted.
Commitment to the Public Cause
Appointed as JI’s top leader in April, Hafiz Naeem is determined to provide relief to the masses. He reiterated that, based on past experiences, JI will not be part of any alliance but will continue to do everything possible to address the concerns of the public.
