LAHORE: Lahore has been ranked as the world’s most polluted city, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing the 400 mark, classifying it as hazardous, according to IQAir data released on Tuesday.
New Delhi follows in second place with an AQI of 285, and Dubai is third with 166. Karachi also ranks 13th, with an AQI of 107, posing health risks to sensitive groups.
Environmental experts warn that Lahore’s pollution spikes as cooler weather arrives. Slower winds trap pollution, leading to smog. The city’s air is now 80 times more polluted than safe levels, said environmentalist Yasir Husain.
Agricultural waste burning, vehicle emissions, and power production are major pollution sources. Despite government measures like smog squads and brick kiln conversions, the issue persists. Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that artificial rain could be used to reduce smog if needed, but urged citizens to report pollution violations.
Citizens are advised to take precautions such as avoiding outdoor exercise, wearing masks, and keeping windows closed to limit exposure.
