Marriyum Aurangzeb was sworn in as a member of the Punjab Assembly.
This decision was taken by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership with the intention of having her assist PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz after the latter is elected as the chief minister.
After consulting with each other, Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, the leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), made this decision.
Marriyum has been sworn in as an MPA in the provincial assembly for the first time. She has previously been elected twice as a National Assembly member on a reserved seat and has also been appointed as Federal Information Minister twice.
On Friday, the newly elected members of Punjab Assembly were sworn in during its maiden session following the February 8 general elections.
Although elections for the leader of the House in the Punjab Assembly are pending, the PML-N has already begun preparing Maryam for the chief minister’s position, given the party’s clear majority in the provincial legislature.
According to sources, Maryam chaired a parliamentary meeting earlier this week at Jati Umra in Lahore. The meeting was attended by 218 Punjab MPAs, including independent members, PML-N MPAs, as well as members who were nominated for reserved seats. Maryam presided over the meeting.
The sources said that 137 successful candidates from PML-N, 58 women nominated for reserved seats, and over 22 independent members who joined PML-N after the elections were present at the meeting.
