Lahore police have arrested Hasan Shah, the alleged mastermind of a gang that honey trapped renowned playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar. Alongside Shah, an accomplice named Rafiq was also apprehended in Peshawar. The police report that Shah had made an “objectionable” video of Qamar viral, intensifying the scandal.
The incident began when a woman lured Qamar to her home late at night, under the pretense of discussing a new drama project. Once Qamar arrived, armed men stormed in, assaulted him, and demanded a hefty ransom. The playwright was only allowed to leave after paying the demanded amount.
This shocking event occurred on July 15, but it wasn’t until July 21 that an official complaint was filed under Sections 395 (punishment for dacoity) and 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Following Qamar’s report, the Organised Crime Unit (OCU) of Model Town launched an investigation, resulting in the arrest of 12 suspects, including a key figure, Amina Urooj. Currently, Urooj and the other suspects are in custody as the investigation continues.
Qamar, known for his popular dramas like “Meray Paas Tum Ho” and “Pyarey Afzal,” recounted the night of the incident. He explained that he met the woman at 4:40 a.m. because his doctor had advised him to avoid going out during the daytime for five years due to health concerns.
“Even without my doctor’s advice, we often meet people at night, and I don’t differentiate between men and women,” Qamar told reporters. He emphasized that he did not force anyone into meeting him and that the woman was eager to discuss her interest in working on a drama project.
The case has garnered significant attention, with many following the developments closely. The arrests mark a crucial step in addressing the crime, but the investigation is far from over. As police continue to delve into the details, the public awaits further updates on this high-profile case.
