ISLAMABAD – Residents of Islamabad are facing a significant price hike as the cost of milk has increased by Rs20 per liter, effective July 5, 2024. The Dairy Association has announced that the price per liter has risen from Rs220 to Rs240.
The association cited the rising electricity prices and other operational costs as the primary reasons for the increase. The recent hike in power tariffs, announced by the government and approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), has particularly impacted dairy production costs.
On July 4, the Finance Division issued a notification confirming the increase in the base tariff of electricity by up to Rs7.12 per unit. Lifeline consumers using up to 50 units per month will continue to pay Rs3.95 per unit, while those using 51 to 100 units per month will pay Rs7.74 per unit.
Consumers using up to 200 units per month are exempt from the tariff increase for three months, maintaining their current rates through July, August, and September. However, those using 201 to 300 units per month will now pay Rs34.26 per unit, reflecting a Rs7.12 increase. Users consuming 301 to 400 units will see their rates rise by Rs7.02 to Rs39.15 per unit. For 401 to 500 units, the new rate is Rs41.36 per unit, a Rs6.12 increase.
For consumers using 501 to 600 units, the rate has increased to Rs42.78 per unit, and for 601 to 700 units, it is now Rs43.92 per unit, both reflecting a Rs6.12 hike. Those using more than 700 units will face a new rate of Rs48.84 per unit, also a Rs6.12 increase.
This surge in utility costs has forced the dairy sector to adjust milk prices accordingly, impacting household budgets across the federal capital.
