KARACHI: Street crime continues to be a major issue in Karachi, with more than 44,000 incidents reported in the first seven months of this year, according to a report by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).
The report highlights over 31,000 cases of motorcycle theft and snatching, along with more than 1,000 car thefts and snatching incidents. Additionally, over 11,000 mobile phones were snatched from citizens during this period. The city also saw 12 cases of kidnapping for ransom and 57 incidents of extortion.
Karachi’s Additional Inspector General (AIG) Javed Akhtar Odho released a performance report for the past week, revealing that the police were involved in 31 encounters with criminals. During these encounters, three robbers were killed, and 34 others were injured, leading to the arrest of 50 suspects on the spot.
Overall, more than 732 suspects were arrested last week. The report also noted that significant amounts of drugs were seized, including 107.83 kilograms of hashish and 1.16 grams of ice (crystal meth). Police also recovered 108 illegal weapons and took 29 motorcycles into custody.
