ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been recognized as the lowest-risk country regarding food safety standards for the fiscal year 2023-24. The country’s rice exports account for 25% of the European rice export market, surpassing India, which holds 16%.
This announcement came during a meeting between the newly elected Chairman of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), Malik Faisal Jahangir, and Commerce Minister Jam Kamal. They discussed ways to maintain rice exports amid falling international prices and India’s recent decision to lift its rice export ban starting in October.
Mr. Jahangir reported that only 74 rapid alerts related to pesticides and other issues were issued against Pakistani rice exporters last year, compared to 264 alerts for India. “This indicates that our rice sector is more compliant,” he noted.
He pointed out that Pakistan remains a low-risk country for food safety, while countries like Turkey, India, Spain, Italy, and the UK face a higher number of alerts.
However, Mr. Jahangir expressed concerns about a negative campaign that could damage Pakistan’s export reputation. He shared positive feedback about the reduced regulatory challenges faced by Pakistani rice exports compared to competitors.
To improve competitiveness with India, the commerce ministry has removed the minimum export price. However, it is believed that low prices may prevent Pakistan from matching last year’s export value.
Commerce Minister Kamal emphasized the importance of enhancing Pakistan’s rice exports and complying with European food safety standards. He called for better cooperation between the government and exporters to maintain a competitive edge.
Mr. Kamal highlighted the vital role of rice exports in Pakistan’s economy, stating that rice is the second most valuable export after cotton. He mentioned that rice exporters are essential for revenue and job creation, with government plans to boost exports from $4 billion to $6-7 billion soon. “We are working to improve our standards to meet international food safety requirements, especially in Europe,” he added.
The minister also mentioned recent diplomatic developments, including the visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
