Pakistan Lawyers Seek Supreme Court Action on Judicial Interference

Over 300 Pakistani lawyers are urging the Supreme Court to take direct action on allegations of intelligence agency interference in judicial matters.

This follows a letter from Islamabad High Court judges expressing similar concerns.

The government established an inquiry commission, but the lawyers view it as insufficient. They cite Article 184(3) of the Constitution, urging the Supreme Court’s involvement due to the public interest and fundamental rights at stake.

Demands for Transparency and Action:

The lawyers support resolutions by bar associations defending judicial independence and backing the Islamabad High Court judges. They call for a Supreme Court bench with all available judges to hear the case and for televised proceedings. Additionally, they urge a national lawyers’ convention to decide on a unified response.

Restoring Public Trust in Judiciary:

The lawyers emphasize the need to restore public trust in the judiciary through a transparent investigation and a strong stance from the Supreme Court. This situation highlights concerns about judicial independence in Pakistan, and the lawyers’ demands call for a clear resolution.
