Pakistan’s rice exports are booming.
They’ve already reached 5 million tons this year, which is close to their goal of 6 million tons. This success is due to good weather, availability of supplies for farmers, and a ban on non-Basmati rice exports from India.
Basmati rice, a more expensive and fragrant variety, is doing especially well. Pakistan’s Basmati exports are up 24% this year, even though they face some competition from India. However, Pakistan’s Basmati earns a slightly higher price per ton than India’s.
There are some concerns about the future. Pakistan may not reach its 6 million ton goal because they’re running low on non-Basmati rice. Additionally, if India lifts their export ban, it could hurt Pakistani rice farmers. Experts believe Pakistan should develop its hybrid seed varieties and find new markets for Basmati rice.
