PTA Warns Against Buying Cloned and IMEI Patched Phones in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Due to high taxes on imported mobile phones, illegal practices like phone cloning and IMEI patching have increased in Pakistan. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned buyers to avoid these cloned devices.

The PTA advises purchasing phones from trusted sellers. Make sure the phone is new, in its original packaging, includes a warranty, displays the PTA stamp, and has matching IMEI numbers on both the box and the device.

To check if a device is legitimate, buyers should visit the DIRBS website or text the IMEI number to 8484. If the PTA warns of a cloned device, verify the IMEI by dialing *#06# and comparing it with the number in the PTA’s message.

The PTA also urges users to submit proof of purchase and FBR tax payment through the PTA’s complaint portal. Avoid buying high-end devices at significantly reduced prices or without a warranty.
