Rawalpindi: Six more employees of Adiala Jail have been arrested for allegedly helping Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), while he was in custody, sources revealed on Tuesday.
Among the arrested employees are a sweeper, two lady wardens, and three officials responsible for monitoring the jail’s surveillance cameras. According to sources, three of the arrested employees are women. These female staff members are accused of passing messages between Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, while they were both in prison. The authorities have confiscated the cell phones of the arrested employees as part of the investigation.
This development follows the earlier arrest of the former deputy superintendent of Adiala Jail, Muhammad Akram, who was taken into custody on charges of secretly aiding Imran Khan. Akram was removed from his position on June 20 and replaced by Deputy Superintendent Judicial Tahir Siddique Shah.
The law enforcement agencies (LEAs) have intensified their monitoring of Adiala Jail, increasing the manpower to ensure tighter security.
Imran Khan, who has been in jail for more than a year, faces multiple legal challenges, including cases related to the Toshakhana, cipher, and un-Islamic marriage allegations. Although a court suspended his sentence in the Toshakhana case and overturned his convictions in the cipher and iddat cases, his release was blocked by new charges brought by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) concerning the sale of state gifts.
Additionally, the chances of his release diminished further after Lahore Police declared his arrest in several cases related to the May 9, 2023, riots, where protesters targeted government and military installations following his initial detention by Islamabad High Court last year.
