Spain has decided to require masks in healthcare centers due to a rise in cases of the flu and COVID.

Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia has announced a new rule requiring people to wear masks in healthcare centers across the country starting Wednesday. This decision comes as Spain experiences a surge in flu and COVID-19 cases.

Garcia emphasized the importance of protecting the most vulnerable individuals and stated that it is a common-sense measure. The health ministry’s directive mandates mask-wearing in hospitals and healthcare centers, while also recommending masks in private clinics, pharmacies, and other medical facilities like dentist offices.

Some regions in Spain had already implemented mask mandates in hospitals last week, and the central government is proposing to extend this requirement nationwide. The regions have the flexibility to lift the mask mandate if COVID-19 infections decrease consistently for two weeks.

Notably, Spain was one of the last European countries to lift face mask requirements post the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of face masks was maintained on public transport until February 2023 and in healthcare settings and pharmacies until July.
