Swiss people have strongly voted to get a ’13th-month’ pension increase.

Switzerland voted strongly in favor of increasing pension payments for older people in a recent referendum.

The vote showed that more than 58% of people supported the idea of an extra pension, which means getting a 13th monthly payment each year.

This decision came as people were worried about the high cost of living and wanted a stronger social safety net. The proposal, supported by unions and left-leaning parties, needed approval from the majority of Switzerland’s 26 regions, and most of them backed it.

However, the government, businesses, and the right-leaning parliament opposed it, citing financial concerns. Despite this, the vote marks a significant milestone for the union. Unlike previous referenda where people were cautious about measures seen as risky for businesses, this time, they opted for increased pension benefits.

This decision contrasts with previous votes that rejected ideas like a shorter workweek and more holidays.
