The cost of eggs reaches the highest point.

Amidst the coldest days of the year in Karachi, residents are feeling the pinch as egg prices surge by Rs13 per dozen this week. Now, a single egg is priced at Rs40 in the city, leaving consumers concerned. Many express frustration, labeling this peak in egg prices as a failure of the government’s price control measures.

Retailers, however, provide a different perspective, attributing the situation to the costly chicken feed and the steep rise in wholesale rates. The cost of a dozen eggs in Karachi has escalated from Rs280-300 a few months ago to the current Rs400, according to retailers. They assert that they are compelled to purchase eggs at elevated prices from wholesalers, who, in turn, blame the escalating cost of chicken feed for the situation.

This surge in egg prices has prompted many families to rethink their egg purchases, opting for fewer eggs than a dozen. The impact extends beyond households, affecting popular breakfast options like “anda and paratha” at local restaurants, with costs becoming unaffordable for many.

Wholesalers, observing a decline in egg demand, continue to emphasize the rising prices of chicken feed as the root cause behind these price hikes. As consumers navigate these challenges, concerns about the affordability and accessibility of essential food items in the market persist.
