The cost of electricity in Pakistan is going up again.
This time, the increase is Rs2.75 per unit, adding an extra Rs85.2 billion burden on consumers. This decision was made by Nepra, the government agency that regulates electricity prices.
There’s some relief, though. This Rs2.75 increase will only apply to bills for April, May, and June. This is because two previous increases, totaling Rs4.43 per unit, are expiring at the end of March. So, the overall impact on your bill might be less than Rs2.75.
This hike only applies to most customers. People who use very little electricity (lifeline consumers) and customers of K-Electric (a separate power company) will not be affected.
This price increase is part of a larger agreement between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a loan. The IMF requires Pakistan to raise electricity prices to get the loan money.
