RAWALPINDI: Security forces successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt by three terrorists crossing the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in District Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday.
“On the night between July 21 and 22, 2024, security forces detected the movement of three terrorists trying to infiltrate the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in District Dir,” the ISPR stated.
The terrorists were surrounded and engaged in a fierce firefight, resulting in their elimination. The military’s media wing emphasized that Pakistan has repeatedly urged the interim Afghan government to ensure effective border management to prevent such infiltration.
“The interim Afghan government is expected to fulfill its obligations and prevent terrorists from using Afghan soil to launch attacks against Pakistan,” the statement added.
The ISPR reaffirmed the commitment of Pakistan’s security forces to securing the country’s borders and eliminating terrorism.
Recently, there has been a surge in terrorist attacks, particularly in KP and Balochistan. Last week, two soldiers and five civilians were martyred in DI Khan. Just 24 hours earlier, eight soldiers were martyred while foiling a terrorist infiltration in Bannu Cantonment.
Pakistan has consistently called on the Afghan Taliban administration in Kabul to prevent their territory from being used by militant groups for attacks against Pakistan.
In response to the rising militancy, the government approved the launch of Operation “Azm-e-Istehkam,” a renewed national anti-terror campaign.
During the second quarter of 2024, Pakistan witnessed 380 fatalities and 220 injuries from 240 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations, according to the Annual Security report by the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS).
KP and Balochistan, both bordering Afghanistan, reported nearly 92% of all fatalities and 87% of attacks, with KP suffering 67% and Balochistan 25% of all fatalities in Q2, 2024.
