Topics: Elon Musk’s X competitor, Meta, launches in the EU

Meta’s social media app, Threads, initially launched outside the European Union and garnered an impressive 100 million users within its first week. However, its release in the EU was delayed due to stringent data and big tech regulations in the region.

Despite the initial surge in user numbers, the platform faced challenges such as the absence of key features like a website and search function, leading to a decline in interest.

Meta, the parent company, has since made “significant improvements” to Threads, addressing some of the initial limitations.

The platform now allows users in the EU to create Threads profiles connected to their Instagram accounts or use Threads without a profile, aiming to reignite interest and engagement.

The delayed launch in the EU is speculated to be related to the bloc’s strict regulatory environment, particularly the implementation of the Digital Services Act in August.

Threads, like many social media platforms, requests access to various user data, including location, purchases, and browsing history.

In response to EU concerns, Meta announced the introduction of subscription services in most of Europe in October. This subscription model is tailored for users in the EU, European Economic Area, and Switzerland, excluding the UK.

Meta’s efforts reflect its commitment to navigating and complying with the evolving regulatory landscape while expanding its services to users in the European region.
