World Bank approves $1 billion for Dasu Hydropower Project.

The World Bank has approved an additional $1 billion for Pakistan’s Dasu Hydropower Stage I (DHP I) Project to support clean and affordable energy.

This funding will expand hydropower electricity, improve local socio-economic services, and enhance the Water and Power Development Authority’s (WAPDA) capacity for future projects.

The announcement came just before Pakistan’s 2024-2025 budget reveal. World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine highlighted the project’s role in addressing Pakistan’s energy challenges and promoting renewable energy. DHP-I will have a capacity of 2,160 MW, generating low-cost renewable energy, with future stages adding more capacity.

Task Team Leader Rikard Liden emphasized DHP-I’s importance in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and saving Pakistan $1.8 billion annually. The project also aims to boost socio-economic development in Upper Kohistan, with improvements in education, health, employment, and infrastructure, especially benefiting women through targeted programs and facilities.
